HISTORY OF THE NESTING DOLL:
So many people now are collectors of the Matryushka dolls with
collections on Pinterest and other sites.
Those ubiquitous Russian lacquered dolls can be seen almost
everywhere now! I saw one on a Starbucks coffee mug in Moscow
this past summer.
Most historians agree that the nesting dolls were first seen in Russia
sometime in the 1800's, although they did not originate in Russia. It
appears that they probably originated in China far earlier in time than
Later, many workshops specializing in the nesting dolls were centered
around the holy city of Sergiev Posad. After the fall of the Soviet
Union, the artisans and craftsmen of the area revived the old
